I loaded Cobian 10 on my HP TouchSmart 520 PC - Windows 7 64-bit systems and performed a system backup with no problems and all selected files were backed up. Later (within days), I performed a differential backup and selected "Mirror" so that renamed and deleted files would also be removed from the backup. When I viewed the backup I realized folders with files that had not been altered were empty and the data files were gone. What went wrong with the mirror function?

Hi,

That's exactly the same behaviour I've just realized right now. Aproximately a month ago I started a new task to perform mirror copy of my desktop folder. Options were all default except for: differential, and mirror-task.

First execution went well (full backup, as required), source and destination folder were just the same, same files and folders, same size.

Now while getting rid of empty folders in backup (unknown reason as they are no longer in source, triggering error in daily log, a total of 6), I've noticed a couple of files missing in top directory. By checking properties of source and mirror destination, a big scaring surprise:

Source is 10,6GB (5062 files, 952 folders)
Destination Mirror is 3,90GB (1433 files, 958 folders) (exactly 952 + 6)

I haven't modified anything except for selecting differential/mirror and letting the task run everyday. Is something about permissions, admin rights, indexing? For me it sounds as Cobian would think that those missing files have been copied and actually are in mirror. And if this is a bug, misconfiguration or Windows related issue, it's a really worrying one. I would say is high priority, but don't know if this happens to other users, across diferent installations or scenarios.

(Edit: I've just recalled that a few large folders were renamed. So maybe that's the reason not to find them properly mirrored or empty)

Desktop folder is my working space so changes often with many projects and files. I can help by testing or providing logs as required to fix it.

Thanks in advance for your time, and for such a great piece of software.

A mirror is NOT a backup. It took 10 years to be added (against my will). For version 11 I have added an extra checking against exactly this issue, but once again: a mirror should NEVER be used as a backup.

This is some kind of bug (or bad combination of options) that has already been discussed in the old forum:

http://www.cobiansoft.co...aspx?g=posts&t=4971

The solution for Cobian 10 is to not use / uncheck the file attribute logic. Then mirroring will work the way expected (and with the usual risk of data loss ;-), so don't forget about a real backup)

The way to fix this in version 11 I will quote myself...:-) :

Quote:

1. If mirror is used then the use of archive attribute shouldn't be possible to prevent data loss in case of moving/renaming folders (this would be of no use for NAS users as they now can't use mirroring)

2. Or if the use of archive attribute is allowed/prefered then:
If a file/folder doesn't exist in the destination then the file/folder should be copied regardless of the archive attribute set or unset (and regardless of the backup type).

Of course option 2 would be the best solution if I got the problem right.

Thanx for all your effort Cobian,
Filbert
